Queers in sports and the 2012 Pride Run
This evening at 7:00PM, Out in the Bay, our 2012 Pride Run beneficiary, will be bringing listeners an interview with David Kopay, the 2012 Pride Run race marshal.
In 1975, former 49er David Kopay came out as gay, wrote a bestselling book about it, and rocked the sports world. Yet 37 years later, only a handful of major athletes have followed him out of the closet. He’s still an activist and an athlete, and is the official race starter for this year’s SF FrontRunners Pride Run, June 23 in Golden Gate Park. He tells his story on this week’s Out in the Bay. You’ll hear much more about queers in athletics and homophobia in sports from Helen Carroll, who leads the Sports Project at the National Center for Lesbian Rights; Roger Brigham, sports writer for the Bay Area Reporter; and long-time FrontRunner Katharine Holland. Eric Jansen hosts.
