Q: Where and when does the group meet?
A:
The SFFR group meets Saturday mornings just prior to 9AM at the Stow Lake Boat House parking lot in Golden Gate Park. Look for approximately 25 people (on rainy days) to 100 people (on sunny days), chatting in groups, and you’ll know that you’re in the right place.

On Tuesdays, we meet directly under the clock tower at the Ferry Building. Look for us there around 6:30PM.

Finally, our Sunday Long Run group meets in front of Fitness SF (formerly Gold's Gym) at Market and Noe Street around 10AM.

Q: Can somebody give me more info prior to my first run?
A: Absolutely. Welcoming Committee members will be out and about looking for new runners; they are there to help make your first run a positive experience. Please go up to a Welcoming Committee member and let them know that you’re at your first SFFR run (or perhaps visiting, or maybe bringing a friend for the first time). They will explain the different runs the group does and show you maps of the routes.

Q: What can I expect on my first Saturday morning run?
A: At 9:00, the group has “first circle” in the grassy picnic area just to the west of the parking lot. Everybody introduces themselves and SFFR officers make announcements regarding the runs. First time runners are also introduced to the group and regaled with a pink ribbon to commemorate the occasion. Please WEAR these ribbons since they help the other FrontRunners identify new individuals running with the group and can then guide you on the various routes through the park.

Q: Any details about the actual runs?
A: Runs are as follows: 1-mile walk around Stowe Lake; 3-mile run that passes the Carrousel; 4-mile run that goes by the buffalo pens; and 5-mile run to the ocean (with the added bonus of seeing surfers in/out of their wetsuits!). We also have a cross training option which involves lots of body weight exercises and aroudn 5K of running.

"First circle" generally starts around 9:00. The runs generally start by 9:10. SFFR has some fairly serious runners who maintain a quick pace, although most FrontRunners view the Saturday morning run as a chance to catch up with other runners and will run at a pace that allows them to talk throughout the entire run. There are also bathrooms and water fountains along the runs for emergency stops.

All runs end at the Stow Lake parking lot. After runners get a chance to stretch, drink some water, and socialize some more, the officers conduct the “second circle” right there in the parking lot, shortly after 10:00. Announcements are made regarding upcoming races, social events, fundraisers, and special events in which FrontRunners might be participating.

Q: Does anybody plan a brunch after the runs?
A: We’ve definitely got you covered here! At “first circle,” SFFR officers take an approximate count of members who plan on attending the weekly brunch (held after the run at Morning Due Café, 17th and Church Streets in the Castro district) so that we can let the restaurant know how large of a table we’ll need. First time runners are more than welcome to attend the brunch and get to know other members in a relaxed setting. (Note that on the 2nd Saturday of every month, there is a Bagel Brunch for all runners immediately after the runs – bagels, yogurt, fruit, coffee, juice, muffins, etc. – in the picnic area for a nominal charge.) After announcements at “second circle,” there is still time for a bit more socializing before moving on to brunch at the Morning Due Café! If you need a ride, just ask. Lots of FrontRunners have extra room in their cars.

Q: What can I do to help make SF FrontRunners a stronger organization?
A: Please check in again with one of the Welcoming Committee members and give us some feedback on your first run. We’re constantly trying to make the club better and stronger and your suggestions are most definitely valued. Naturally, we’d love for you to become a part of our club and join us not only at our runs, but also for the many social activities that we plan throughout the year. We have a wide variety of positions within the club where you can also serve and provide your input and ideas.
